This unique binding technique from the alpine region of Ybrig in Switzerland was historically used by farming women. They used it to bind multipurpose brooms for their everyday lives. The Ybriger washing up brush is a new interpretation of this traditional broom made from cereal roots. The Ybrig knot creates a distinctive handle for this contemporary, everyday brush.
DESIGNER
Flavia Brändle is the Swiss product designer behind Ybriger. Intrigued by an original broom found in a historical museum, Flavia had to find out more about the origins of this object. She was introduced to the binding technique by the half Ybrig based Max Steiner. After testing a variety of materials she finally chose cereal roots for their performance and usability.
MATERIAL
In collaboration with the skilled weavers from JVA Lenzburg they bind the Ybriger out of cereal root, a common brush material from Mexico.
MEASUREMENTS
H 10cm, Ø 5cm
TAKING CARE
Place the whisk 5 minutes in boiling water before the first use and you will get a tough and resilient brush.
